A Message from Jody M. Huckaby, Executive Director, PFLAG

The last two weeks here in Washington have been quite an experience.

The news that many of you have been following is on ENDA, and while the process has not been what we hoped, PFLAGers have a lot to be proud of.

On September 25, the PFLAG staff delivered more than 12,000 postcards from PFLAG members and supporters around the country urging their legislators to support a fully trans-inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Bill. Our voices were heard loud and proud throughout the halls of Congress!

Just a day after we made our delivery, however, the news that our transgender family members would be dropped from ENDA broke. As of today, it appears that there are two versions of the bill, one which only covers GLB and a second that covers the T.

After all of the work that PFLAG members have done, this is an enormous disappointment. The idea that some in our community are more worthy of basic protections than others is completely unacceptable - and because of this belief, PFLAG has publicly and proudly stated that it will not support a non-inclusive version of the bill, and in fact, PFLAG would oppose any substitute legislation.

Your voices matter on this issue. As we were working on ENDA last week, PFLAG President John Cepek, and his wife Char, joined us on Capitol Hill on Friday to meet with legislators. During the course of our meetings, it became clear that legislators are interested in where PFLAG stands on the issues. They understand how far reaching our chapter network is because they recognize that PFLAG is a critical part of local GLBT communities. In fact, one Congress staffer told us that the best way to educate Congress members on transgender issues is to have more parents, family members and straight allies schedule meetings both in Washington and most importantly, in local district offices, to demonstrate that this is, indeed, a unified family issue.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has announced that she is delaying action on ENDA until later this month. Your calls and voices on ENDA were part of the reason that we have another chance to keep everyone included in this bill, so please continue making your voices heard at this critical time.
