No Longer Silent: Clergy
for Justice |
Believing it was time to speak out in support
of gays and lesbians, in the Fall of 1998 several mainline Christian clergy
formed the No Longer Silent (NSL) organization in the Valley of the Sun.
The public had already heard from right-wing Christian groups; NSL wanted
people to know there are Christians who accept and affirm gays and lesbians
in every way.
As of April, 2003 over 100 clergy
now belong to the group and they are growing swiftly. Churches represented
are:
United Methodists, Presbyterians, United Church of Christ, Lutherans, Catholics,
Unitarians, Disciples of Christ, and American Baptists. NSL expresses
their openness to their own congregations and denominations, and to the
public through letters to the editors, demonstrations, public forums, and
appearances at the Legislature. NSL works toward the day when all
of society will be open to God's children.
