A major television movie -- with a significant focus on PFLAG
-- was filmed in Phoenix during February, 2000. The movie
will air on the Lifetime cable network, which is planning to promote
it heavily.
Titled, "The Truth About Jane," the film focuses on a 16-year-old
girl's coming out to her mother. The mother (played by Stockard
Channing) considers herself quite liberal, but she has a very difficult
time accepting this news about her own daughter (played by newcomer Ellen
Muth). Through PFLAG, the mother gradually becomes more accepting
and supportive. The emotional final scene of the movie takes place
at a Pride rally, where PFLAG members cheer the mother for coming out in
support of her lesbian daughter. The movie also stars James Naughton
and RuPaul, stripped of his drag-queen regalia.
Phoenix PFLAGers and other members of the Phoenix GLBT community
volunteered their time to participate in the climatic Pride rally scene.
Which PFLAG members will make the final cut? Tune in and find out!
The movie is tentatively scheduled to air on the Lifetime cable
channel sometime on August 7th, 2000.
